Should a shortstop back up a throw to 3rd on a steal with a left-handed batter at the plate?

Depends on the situation, but typically no… If there is also a guy on 2nd base, SS must still cover second base on steal. If there is only a guy on 2nd base, then he, obviously, could back up the throw to the best of his ability, but he MUST hold his spot and field his position. Cannot break when the runner goes.

The primary backup for a steal to 3rd base is going to be the left fielder.
