HOW DO YOU SCORE A GROUND BALL OUT ON THIS INFIELD SHIFT?

The third baseman shifts to play between the 1st and 2nd baseman. How is a groundball out to the 3rd baseman in that position scored? 5-3 or 4-3?

COACH HENZE’S ANSWER

Thanks for the question!

I am going to take a stab at this answer without knowing for sure. Let’s hope some of my visitors can help us out with this one.

If the 3rd baseman makes that shift you describe, he is still the 3rd baseman in the lineup so I believe it would still be scored a 5-3 putout.

I don’t understand why a team would make that shift instead of simply shifting his whole infield over in that direction, but I am sure it has been done…

Anyone else out there know this answer for sure? Or simply share your opinion…
