NOT SURE THE BATTING AVERAGE IS EVIL?

This was a very interesting topic. I still think the “batting average” stat is a pretty good indicator of how well a hitter is performing. Please note that I said “pretty good.” I’ll meet you half way on this one but not all the way.

On the other hand, I would love to see a “Quality At Bat” stat started also. It just might show how valuable a hitter really is to his team. Hey, a base hit that knocked in an important run would not have produced that run if the player before him hadn’t executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second base. Or the player who hits the game winning sac fly would not have knocked in that run if the batter before him hadn’t hit a grounder on the right side and advanced that runner on second base to third base.

I tip my hat to Steve Springer for coming up with this great idea!
