I don’t play baseball, but have a friend who needs help. He is 12 and has been hit in the ribs, forearm, and fractured his ankle and a lot more… All the sudden, he is jumping away from the ball every pitch even if it’s straight down the middle. HELP!!!

THE COACH’S ANSWER

Thanks for trying to help you friend out and coming to My Youth Baseball!

The fear of getting hit with a pitch is a common problem that many youth baseball players learn to overcome. I have written a good article about how to help with this fear at: http://www.myyouthbaseball.com/fear-of-getting-hit.html

Another problem that occurs when a player is stepping in the bucket like you described is the fact that they really can’t hit a baseball that way. Even if they conquer that fear of getting hit, they may have learned a very bad habit with their stride. Be sure to correct that right away. Nobody can consistently hit a baseball when they step in the bucket during their stride.

Thanks again for coming to MYB for help. Be very encouraging while helping this player.
