**(Putouts+Assists) divided by (Putouts+Assists+Errors)**Fielding percentage, also called fielding average, is the most common defensive statistic that is used today. It, basically, measures the success rate of fielding chances for each player.
The official scorer for each game plays a major role in this statistic because he determines if the hit ball would have required an ordinary amount of effort to complete the play. If the player doesn’t make an “ordinary” play, he is charged with an error and that lowers his fielding average.
The negative aspect of this error is that it rewards a player that doesn’t attempt to make a difficult play and avoiding the error.
