DO MLB PITCHERS AND CATCHERS STILL HOLD PREGAME MEETINGS ON HOW TO PITCH HITTERS?

In my interview with Johnny Schmitz, an old Cub pitcher, he questioned if this was still being done. He used to do it with his catcher.

With all the video of hitters that pitchers can utilize, perhaps meetings are bypassed.

COACH HENZE’S ANSWER

Thanks for the question!

I don’t have any inside information on what Major League Baseball pitchers do to prepare for each game, but I have read interviews and articles about it before. Most recently, I read an article about Joe Mauer meeting with the coaching staff and the starting pitcher before each game and going over a “game-plan” for every hitter in the opposing team’s lineup.

I think it would be wrong to assume that this doesn’t happen anymore. Most players are professional and know they need to do their homework before going out and performing. This is their career.

I have an ex-player that I coached in high school that pitches for the Angels AAA team in Salt Lake City. He was in spring training with the Major League Club last year. I may send him a note to see what happens on a regular basis with the Angels pitching and catching staff in regards to their pre-game preparation. If I get in contact with him, I will post a comment here.

Thanks again for the question about pregame meetings with pitchers, catchers and coaches.
