Getting the most out of your practices means using your time wisely. The double infield drill will give your players more reps in a shorter amount of time while working on different situations.
In this baseball infield drill, you will need two coaches and at least one player at first base, second base, third base and shortstop. It works best if each coach has his own catcher also. The coaches will alternate hitting ground balls.
During the first part of the drill, one coach will hit ground balls to the third baseman who will make the throw to the first baseman. The other coach will hit ground balls to the second baseman who will feed the shortstop double play feeds (the shortstop will just work on footwork and fake a throw to first). Do this for however long you choose, but don’t go too long…
The second part of the drill will have one coach hitting ground balls to the shortstop who will throw the ball to the first baseman. The other coach will hit ground balls to the third baseman who will feed the 2nd baseman for a double play (the 2nd baseman will just work on footwork and fake a throw to first).
The third part of the drill will have one coach hitting ground balls to the shortstop who will feed the second baseman for a double play (the 2nd baseman will just work on footwork and fake a throw to first). The other coach will hit ground balls to the first baseman who will make a throw to the third baseman (the third baseman should work on making a good tag).
The last part of the drill will simply have one coach hitting ground balls to the first baseman who will throw to the shortstop for a double play feed. The other coach and players can prepare for the next portion of practice.
