**Number of Hits (divided by) Number of At Bats**Batting average is the most common and understood statistic in baseball. I has been used as the benchmark for hitters since the late 1800’s. It is easy to understand and easy to compute.

The only thing you need to remember is that “At Bats” do not include “Walks” or “Hit By Pitches.” At Bats = Total Plate Appearances minus Walks and Hit By Pitches.
Below is an example:
Nolan has 50 At Bats (he actually has 62 plate appearances but has walked 10 times and was hit by pitch 2 times which = 50 at bats) and 25 hits. His Average is: .500
