BASEBALL RE-ENTRY RULE – HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN IN EFFECT?

by Jim Harkins
(Philadelphia, PA)

How long ago was the rule that a player cannot return to game once he was taken out? Has this re-entry rule always been in effect?

COACH HENZE’S ANSWER

Thanks for the question!

I am guessing that you are talking about Major League Baseball’s re-entry rule in your question… I am not sure how long that rule has been in effect, but professional baseball players cannot re-enter the game once taken out of it. Period.

In most youth and high school leagues, the rules allow a player to re-enter the game one time after being taken out. They must re-enter the game in the exact same spot in the batting order also. However, there is free defensive substitution anytime during the game (ie. players can rotate defensive positions at any point during the game without limit).

MORE THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS?

Please share your thoughts and comments about this question. I really didn’t answer the question about how long this rule has been in effect, so share the answer if you know.

Thanks!
